Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an injury sustained due to moderate or severe physical force to the head. Most TBI's result in at least some permanent damage to the brain. Any injury to the head may cause traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Each year, traumatic brain injuries contribute to a substantial number of deaths and cases of permanent disability. Every year, at least 1.7 million TBI's occur either as an isolated injury or along with other injuries

TBI is a contributing factor to a third (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths in the United States. On average, approximately 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury annually.

Many TBI injuries are caused by serious traffic accidents. Without the proper investigation and knowledge, such injuries are sometimes misdiagnosed or missed altogether.

Symptoms of mild TBI include headache, confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision or tired eyes, ringing in the ears, bad taste in the mouth, fatigue or lethargy, a change in sleep patterns, behavioral or mood changes, and trouble with memory, concentration, attention, or thinking. A moderate or severe TBI may have a headache, vomiting, nausea, and seizures.

Types of Severe TBI

There are two types of severe TBI:

Closed - an injury to the brain caused by movement of the brain within the skull. Causes may include falls, motor vehicle crash, or being struck by or with an object.

Penetrating - an injury to the brain caused by a foreign object entering the skull. Causes may include firearm injuries or being struck with a sharp object.

These types of cases are extremely complex and require an attorney experienced with handling traumatic brain injury cases.
